In an attempt at helpful advice and complete documentation of the Craigslist Miata, this is a guide to changing the oil on the NA6 Mazda Miata. Also I will have a list to refer back to when standing in front of a wall of filters at Autozone.
- Load the car up on the ramps. Brace with old tires where possible. Helpful to have a second person.
- Place drain pan under the car, I also use an old piece of carpet as a splatter platter.
- Open the oil fill on the valve cover.
- Twist off the old oil filter slowly such as to not make a mess.
- Using a 19 mm wrench, or 17mm if you have an NB remove drain plug.
- Let it drain.
- At this point there is usually some left over oil from the last time I did this, so I pour what’s left through the engine.
- Let that drain.
- Check the engine.
- Reinstall the drain plug.
- Take the Fram PH6607 oil filter and place a slight coating of fresh oil around the rubber seal.
- Add 3.6 qts of 10W-30 motor oil, I think 4 for the 1.8 see specs at Moss.
- Around 378.5 mL should be left in the fourth quart.
- Make sure that nothing is leaking.
- Warm up the car and make sure nothing is leaking.
- Drive around slowly and check again to make sure no leaks.
- Clean up the new garage.
So you need 4 quarts of 10W-30, a Fram PH6607 and a 19mm wrench. The math comes from how much is left after pouring 60% of the last quart bottle .4(946 mL) which should be .3785…
